Firekeeper

Firekeeper

The next time you are passing a house or an apartment with warm glowing light pouring forth onto a snow-covered exterior, imagine that house is you.

If we are looking out of only one window, we will master and be mastered by only that perspective.

If we try to look out of every window, we will be inefficient. We will have many partial, half-baked perspectives.

If we take self-responsibility to tend to our inner fire, we have switched the onus of illumination.

Being the FIREKEEPER is not always glamorous work. Sometimes we are covered in ash and soot, but the payoff is shared by all touched by the warmth and light.

I was rather literary in college—one year I wrote a series of very solemn and obvious editorials for the ‘Yale News.’—and now I was going to bring back all such things into my life and become again that most limited of all specialists, the ‘well-rounded man.’ This isn’t just an epigram—life is much more successfully looked at from a single window, after all.
